VIENNA – The red, well, blue hot Bears rolled into Vienna looking to solidify their position in the top six which would give them a guaranteed spot in the playoffs, but playing against the league leading team never comes as an easy task. And it wasn’t. Andreas Nodl scored the winner late in the second period, and JP Lamoreux put on a clinic in the final 20 minutes to keep the three points in Vienna.
While the Caps are already sitting in a secured playoff position, Medvescak came out firing from all cylinders in dire need of a win. The first period was rather eventless and evened out, but the Bears took the lead early in the second. The lead, however, didn’t last very long – Aaron Brocklehurst fired away a loose puck directly from the slot, which ended up behind Vili Rosandic. After reviewing the goal due to a possible goaltender interference, the officials stuck with the decision on the ice. It was a tie game all over again.
Andreas Nodl brought the Capitals up by one, 12 seconds before the end of the second period after receiving a great royal road pass from Rafael Rotter, leaving no chance for Vili Rosandic.
Medvescak came out poised and ready for a strong final period of the game, but JP Lamoreux proved why he was the best goaltender in the league and saved all 12 shots that he faced in the last 20 minutes and stole the game for the hosts.
With the win against Zagreb, Vienna secured the first place and a direct qualification for the Champions Hockey League, while Zagreb are now left with four games that are absolute must wins, if they want to stay in sixth place. At home against Vienna and Znojmo, and on the road against Fehervar and the season finale in Znojmo.
